My first task as a teacher is to lead each student to experience successes in my subject.

In a writing class, for example, this might be the discovery that they are able to write material that others are actually interested in reading. They receive encouraging peer response and ideas for improvement. Suddenly, they start paying attention to how their language skills are working for or against them, because suddenly what they have to say matters.

They begin to care about making their meanings clear,
their word choices precise, their word flow engaging,
their topics relevant to their readers--

My role then is to provide my students plenty of tools and opportunities to enjoy expressing their thoughts confidently.
